The Story
The Backstory
It started with my own Pixel Watch. After a year of wearing it, I got bored with the static, flat watch faces available on the Play Store. I really liked the "Depth Effect" on the Apple Watch where the time sits between the subject and the background. I wanted that cinematic feel on Android, but I couldn't find any app that did it right.
The Challenge
I realized why it didn't exist yet. Most modern watch faces are built with basic design tools that restrict creativity to save battery. They can't handle dynamic 3D effects with your own photos.
The Solution
Since I have been an Android developer for over 15 years (started on Cupcake 1.5!), I decided to create my own solution. I spent months of nights and weekends coding a custom solution. It uses on-device Machine Learning to analyze your photos privately, separate the subject, and create a true depth effect.
It was a technical challenge to make it work within the strict constraints of Wear OS watch faces, but the end result is exactly what I wanted for my own watch.
